Here’s our interview with Delain’s Charlotte Wessels ahead of their tour of North America and UK

Busily packing for Delain’s next foray into North America, Charlotte Wessels took time out to chat with The Classic Rock Show about ‘The Human Contradiction’ album, released earlier this year.

Delain are on the eve of celebrating Charlotte’s tenth year with the group – something which is not lost on Charlotte and she makes comment on in the interview – and since signing with Napalm Records they have been able to make and stand by their own decisions. The independence that they have been offered by the label has reaped rewards as ‘The Human Contradiction’ is their most rounded and polished album to date; the songwriting and musicianship is there for all to see and hear.

Charlotte also shared her thoughts on this freedom that Delain now have over their songwriting, as well as her feelings towards the work that the Sophie Lancaster Foundation continue to do in raising awareness of prejudice and intolerance.

This, together with hearing how much Delain are looking forward to returning to North America and later to the UK in November, makes for an interesting interview with one of the most recognised voices in rock, let alone the genre of Symphonic Metal.

Hellyeah’s Christian Brady talks to The Classic Rock Show

images

When we interviewed Hellyeah’s Vinnie Paul last week – click here for the link – he spoke about Kyle Sanders and Christian Brady joining the band earlier on in the year.

We caught up with Christian Brady in a noisy pub, The Black Heart, located just behind The Underworld venue where they were playing later that evening.

In his first ever interview as a member of Hellyeah, Christian talks to us about how the band have been working together as a unit both on and off stage, touring in the US, Canada, the UK, and how things went as the headline act on The Sophie Lancaster stage at Bloodstock.

Vinnie Paul of Hellyeah talks about Blood For Blood and album producer Kevin Churko, the new line-up and his infamous hats!

Having seen them totally decimate The Underworld last year, I was keen to see how Hellyeah’s new line-up was performing on the back of their ‘Blood For Blood’ release.

Friends and colleagues who saw Hellyeah at Bloodstock and on a number of dates on this tour had already told me that they were sounding better than ever.

10543596_10204135579896955_6514619416179427378_oGreg Tribbett and Bob Zilla have been replaced by Christian Brady (formerly with Magna-Fi) and Kyle Sanders (formerly with Bloodsimple and is the brother of Mastodon’s Troy Sanders) on guitar and bass respectively. These two exponents of their craft have brought with them another level of energy, positivity and musical focus to Hellyeah’s ‘live’ performances. It’s also noticeable that Chad Gray has more than decent enough backing for his vocals as a consequence of Christian and Kyle’s abilities.

We caught up with Vinnie Paul before they took to the stage and asked him about ‘Blood For Blood’, working with album producer Kevin Churko (Ozzy Osbourne, Slash, In This Moment, Hinder, Five Finger Death Punch) how the tour was going, but I began our chat by asking him about the infamous hats he sports from time to time.

John Garcia to release his solo album!

John Garcia is set to release his solo album John Garcia on August 4th in the UK on Napalm Records!  John recently completed work on the first video from the album for the song “My Mind” and The Classic Rock Show will be discussing all this and much more with John very soon.

With ‘Vista Chino’, Garcia makes music very close to his ‘Kyuss’ roots, but on his self-titled solo album he also ventures out with some experiments and convinces all along the line. This record is full of first-class, catchy rock numbers that commute equally between Classic Rock and concise Stoner elements.

Once you’ve made contact and started ingesting the tracks ‘My Mind’ or ‘5000 Miles’, you will see this album is spreading like an infection to the body and one is happy to be involved in the short and crisp ‘Saddleback’ or  ‘Confusion’, which is strongly rooted in Blues. ‘Her Bullets Energy’ is the next ultra-bouncer on the record, with the legendary Robby Krieger (The Doors) on the guitar. John Garcia has delivered a multi-faceted and extremely intense solo album that will stir up more dust than a sandstorm in the California desert. Danko Jones, Tom Brayton, Mark Diamond and also Garcia’s old cohort of Kyuss, Nick Oliveri show up as guest musicians to round out this solo masterpiece.

A preview clip of the entire album can be viewed below.

‘John Garcia’ is available on CD, Vinyl and Digitally on Napalm Records on August 4, 2014 – pre-order here.

Keep an eye out for the interview with John.

Uriah Heep’s Bernie Shaw talks about Brazil, footie, touring and the new album Outsider

Uriah Heep, one of the pivotal hard rock groups to emerge from England in the late 1960s, return with ‘Outsider’, the band’s 24th studio album and the first since 2011’s critically acclaimed ‘Into The Wild’.

Formed in London in 1969 by guitarist Mick Box and late singer David Byron as ‘Spice’, the group evolved into Uriah Heep (the name was taken from a character in the Charles Dickens novel ‘David Copperfield’) when they began conceptualising their first record. The album, ‘Very ‘eavy, Very ‘umble’, launched the band’s distinct sound in 1970, one that was built around layered harmony vocals, swirling keyboards, and heavy guitar riffs. Current lead singer Bernie Shaw and keyboardist Phil Lanzon have been ever present since the mid 1980s, while drummer Russell Gilbrook joined in 2007. Mick Box has remained a constant presence throughout.

From the opening chords of the album’s hard driving rocker, ‘Speed of Sound’, to the more introspective closer, ‘Say Goodbye’‘Outsider’ proves that Uriah Heep has remained a musical powerhouse, and one that can effectively balance its legendary sound with a distinctly contemporary approach. The record, which was produced by Mike Paxman (Asia, Status Quo), also introduces bassist Dave Rimmer, who joined the band in the summer of 2013 following the untimely death of long time member Trevor Bolder.

When we played ‘One Minute’ the other week, it got a terrific response. We’re looking forward to playing more tracks from the album.

We caught up with Bernie Shaw who had only just returned from the band’s recent tour of Brazil. We talked about the tour, his observations of everyday life out in Brazil and the World Cup, Uriah Heep’s work ethic, Dave Rimmer the new bass player and how easily he slotted into the band following the passing of Trevor Bolder, how they went about recording the new album and what fans of Uriah Heep can look forward to with the new album ‘Outsider’.

Listen to our interview with Bernie Shaw:

The release of ‘Outsider’ [EU: June 6th, UK: June 9th, NA: June 10th 2014] coincides with a Scandinavian tour and a number of summer festival appearances in mainland Europe, following which Uriah Heep will launch a world tour – including UK dates – as the band promotes the new album to an eager international audience.

This latest offering from THE hardest working rock band on the planet will not disappoint Heep fans. If you’re a fan of Classic Rock and straight up and down rock ‘n’ roll, then ‘Outsider’‘ is without doubt one of those albums that you simply must get.

For all things Uriah Heep, check out their website www.uriah-heep.com and you can follow them on Twitter @Uriah_Heep and on Facebook www.facebook.com/uriahheepofficial

Thanks for listening. ‘The Classic Rock Show’ is on every Thursday, so check us out if you haven’t tuned in before. You’ll be made most welcome.

Cheers!

MJ
